School Newsletter Week 6 Term 1

From the Relieving Principal
New Playground
The opening of the new playground equipment last Friday was a great hit with the students and has been very popular at play times. All of our students from Kindergarten to Year 6 have been exploring the various elements and experimenting with different ways of using them. The monkey bars are particularly popular as is the geo block with the multiple rope and wall climbing options. Apparently it's more difficult to climb over than it looks from the ground. We also had a group of students who enjoyed playing in the piles of leaves that had accumulated behind the safety fence during the construction period!

Congratulations Cara
It was a pleasure to present one of our students with a banner this week for achieving the top level of the award system. This is a substantial achievement, as a banner is received after the students have collected 27 blue awards, 9 silver awards and 3 gold awards for demonstrating the school values of being safe, respectful, kind and active learners. Well done Cara!
Awards System 2025
What is the process when you receive an award? Throughout the year your child may receive a blue award for recognition of upholding the school values:
We are safe, We are kind, We are respectful, We are active learners.
Please keep these awards in a safe place at home. Once you receive 3 blue awards, ask your teacher for a silver award. If you look at the diagram below, you will be able to track your progress:
3 blue awards = one silver award
3 silver awards = one gold award
3 gold awards = a banner.

Week 6 Update
Measuring Length in 1C
1C have been exploring different ways to measure length. Under the shade in the quad, they used tiles to estimate and measure the length of their shoes and then compared the results with their partner. They realised that some of them had the same size shoe! Inside, they used cubes to measure the length of everyday classroom objects. Jagger even measured the length of our door - 87 cubes long!

NAPLAN
NAPLAN will begin next week on Wednesday 12 March for all students in Years 3 and 5. Assessments will be conducted online, except for the Year 3 Writing assessment, which will be handwritten. Students have been asked to bring non-wireless headphones for the parts of the test, like the spelling section, which require audio. Please make sure your child arrives at school on time during this period. If a student misses a scheduled assessment, they may have the opportunity to complete it on another day, as long as it is within the testing period which concludes on Friday 21 March.
Here is the assessment schedule:

URSTRONG

Part of the URSTRONG program is the Friend-o-Meter which encourages children to look at friendships in terms of whether they are healthy or unhealthy and what a healthy or unhealthy friendship looks like.
Of course, it's very normal that sometimes our friendships dip into the red zone on the Friend-o-Meter. This is usually when a Friendship Fire ignites between friends and the key is to put out the Fire by talking it through and get the friendship back into the green zone. Friendship Ninjas are really good at doing this. Children are encouraged to look at body language, their own and others, to see what kind of message is being sent and aim to be a green zone friend.
Sport
SCPSSA Swimming Carnival
The SCPSSA zone swimming carnival was held at Des Renford Lesiure Centre in Maroubra today. We had over 30 students across Years 3-6 competing against 12 other schools in the zone. Well done to all the students, especially the senior boys relay team who have qualified for the regional carnival to be held at Sydney Olympic Park this coming Monday, a fantastic achievement! Thank you to all the parents and staff who assisted and supported the children today.

P&C
Your Class Parents for 2025 have set up the official Class Whats App Groups now. We were very lucky this year, many lovely parents & carers offered to be class parents - and for that the school and I are very grateful!
Only one class is without a class parent - 2D - so if you are interested in taking on this role and being the glue between your teacher and your fellow parents please reach out to me directly. It is a great way to get to know other parents and your child’s teacher, and be involved in the school community. If you would like to read more about the role look here Class Parents on P&C website
We look forward to seeing you all at the Welcome BBQ next week; Friday, March 14th.
